They were like nothing so much as lean, hungry, grey wolves. Grey with fear and exhaustion, lean with hardship, and hungry for blood —the blood of the Japanese who forced them to live like hunted beasts. And you can imagine what a fighting fool John had to become before men like these would accept him.
