Sergeant George Ward, British dispatch rider, was roaring back to his base in France after a routine delivery job and looking forward to bacon and eggs.

Ahead of him the road swung round a long, fast curve and into a dark forest — and what happened when George raced into that wood was to give him nightmares for months to come.
